And that is one of the many Debian problems.
FIREFOX 78 ESR SOFTWARE
Yes, I easily backport packages from sid/testing and package missing software for personal use, but the problem scares away a lot of users. For instance, Debian maintainers do not regularly backport essential packages like git, vim, mpv. I like Debian a lot, but some things do a lot of harm to the distro. I've been a Debian user for a few years, a refugee from Ubuntu LTS. I hope that the Linux kernel won't disappoint the Debian kernel team someday. But the real problem is that an up-to-date browser (any browser, Firefox ESR or latest, LibreWolf, Chromium or ungoogled Chromium) is essential piece of software for the distro to provide desktop functionality.
FIREFOX 78 ESR UPDATE
if helps (in short) with sudo apt update & sudo apt upgrade renaming of those to firefox-esr_78.11.0esr-1~deb10u1_b and firefox-esr_78.11.0esr-1~deb10u1_b? Also, if PureOS Maintainers doesn’t agree for some reason(s) to make this name of package change (rename), I cannot help here any further. No browser is good enough to be in the Debian stable repo :) I understand the problem with the toolchain to compile Firefox. But amd64 related here is output from my Debian 11 (bullseye), 64-bit PC:įirefox-esr/testing 78.11.0esr-1 amd64 įirefox-esr/stable 78.11.0esr-1~deb10u1 amd64įirefox-esr/now 78.10.0esr-1 amd64 įirefox-esr/testing,now 78.11.0esr-1 amd64 įirefox-esr_78.11.0esr-1_b 1 02:45 53Mįirefox-esr_78.11.0esr-1_b 1 02:45 49MĮdit: both above packages are missing ~deb10u1_b extension, and therefore not working (perhaps not allowed to be apt upgraded) properly (just my guess). However, I decided to reach out to support about the firefox-esr update issue I’ve just checked on my Mobian (should work now for everyone on PureOS as well) installation. Full-upgrade to Debian testing fails due to libc6-dev : Breaks: libgcc-8-dev Libc6-dev : Breaks: libgcc-8-dev (< 8.4.0-2~) but 8.3.0-6 is to be installedĮ: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. The following packages have unmet dependencies: The following information may help to resolve the situation: Requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstableĭistribution that some required packages have not yet been created Then things went downhill… $ sudo apt full-upgrade Running sudo apt update said there were 1812 packages that could be upgraded. So after a back up, I finally updated my sources.list file, replacing “amber” with “byzantium”. He suggested the switch to byzantium was probably the best option for me. Firefox 78 ESR is the last version of Firefox that supports macOS versions < 10.12. This means that Flash will officially be out of support on Firefox when Firefox 78 ESR reaches EOL on. After a few messages back and forth, indicated that there was an issue and they wouldn’t be able to update firefox-esr, at least for the time being. The last version of that ESR will be 78.15, which is scheduled to be released on.

However, I decided to reach out to support about the firefox-esr update issue first. Or, is the update on the way, and I just need to be patient, wait a little longer?Ĭomputers can be so much fun (can’t they)…Īfter considering the buster-backports suggestion from (who was kind enough to send some additional info about that option via private message), and then considering byzantium (which some on this forum seem to think relatively stable now), I was leaning toward just switching to byzantium.(almost got there but forgot to push “release”) I tried to explicitly upgrade firefox, but it tells me I’m already on the latest: $ sudo apt upgrade firefox-esrįirefox-esr is already the newest version (78.8.0esr-1~deb10u1).Ġ upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

…and that shows version 78.11.0esr-1~deb10u1 The first search result seems to match my version (and says amber-security), but the third search result also says amber-security, but shows version 78.11.0… Both of these link to the same page: Looking at the changelog, not since Feb 24th.

Noticed there was an update to Thunderbird earlier in the day which got me thinking… it’s been a while since I’ve seen an update for FF.
